Nothing represents the dawn of the age of immense tourism here more than the Gatlinburg Space Needle. Almost 50 years old now, the needle is as iconic as some of the other businesses that have been wowing visitors for that long. With all of the paid attractions on the ground you can do, there are plenty of reasons to love this particular one that takes you more than 400 feet above the lovely tourist town. Here are a few that you will most certainly enjoy when you make the decision to visit!

1. The Mountain Views

I highly recommend a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but if you don’t want to take a drive into the mountains, you can get a great amount of peace just by the views from the Gatlinburg Space Needle. The panoramic scenes are simply incredible: Mt. LeConte providing a superb background to the east; the National Park and its many mountain ranges to the south; and Crockett Mountain, which rises up in the foreground as the most easily visible but no less scenic feature of the area. All in all, these are views that you just can’t get when you’re taking a stroll downtown.

2. Gatlinburg Views

Sure there are other ways to see Gatlinburg from a distance, but seeing the entire town from smack dab in the middle is a perspective unique and unreal in its own right. The viewfinders will help you spot landmarks all over town. And if you love to people watch, well, you can catch a glimpse of just how lively the town is from over 400 feet with these viewfinders. You can get a whole different perspective of the tourist town from a visit to the Gatlinburg Space Needle.

3. It’s a Great Deal

Yes, it’s a paid attraction, but when you consider the amount of time you can spend up here, it’s a great deal to visit the Gatlinburg Space Needle. You can get package deals where you can save money on special group pricing, and deals for children, military members, and seniors. Your ticket is good for not only the daytime, but you can also go up in the evening at sunset, or after darkness blankets the town. Speaking of day and night, this is the next reason to visit.

4. Great Day or Night Visuals

This is a fantastic way to capture your Gatlinburg experience in pictures. Of course your camera can give you the idea that you’re an actual professional photographer with the shots you can get from the Needle. There is no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of the fact you can go up during the day and at night. Get your fill of the mountains during the day, and then see the lights shine brightest when the town is aglow.

5. Surprisingly Peaceful

I know you’re in the middle of town, but it’s amazing how quiet the town feels when you’re on a platform 400 feet up. Even during the busiest moment in the late afternoon hours it’s a surpisingly peaceful way to spend the day. When you need a respite from the bustling nature of Gatlinburg while on the ground—excusing yourself at every turn when going in and out of shops, and walking the sidewalks—there’s few places like the Gatlinburg Space Needle that provide the peace you need.

6. Overcome Your Fear of Heights

The last reason can make your vacation even more memorable. If you’re scared of heights and want to face your fears head on, the Gatlinburg Space Needle is one of the best places to gain this accomplishment. When you go to the top, the elevator is glass and you can see—or not, if you wish—your ascent. This is a little unsettling to me, but depending on how I feel, I’ve gotten used to it. Once at the top, you’ll already feel like you overcame it. Now you can really enjoy what this wonderful attraction offers—if you’re ready to, that is.

Those were some of the best reasons to visit the Gatlinburg Space Needle. I don’t think we braved the trip to the top until our second visit, but we’re glad we did it. Now if we can just conquer a few more rides where we are skyward. If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll know a few off the bat:) Thanks for reading!
